Smart Grid: Coordinating Efforts For the Road Ahead

The concept of a“智能电网”for power utilities is drawing significant interest from researchers, practitioners and governments around the globe. The benefits of making the grid smart would be immense, including improved security, reliability, sustainability, and, perhaps most importantly, more efficient use of renewable energy and storage.
So far the smart grid research community in the United States has seen promising, yet isolated, research and development in power systems, power electronics, material science, communication engineering and economics. But in order to move forward,all these efforts need to be put together to address the overarching challenges facing smart-grid development. The two most natural and compelling tools that bind all these varied aspects of a smart grid together are control and optimization.

As a homeowner would love to get into the solar grid (via photovaltic) but there are no solar energy companies in immediate area & those outside area want $22K+ for a basic 3.5/4 Kw system . Even with energy tax & rate credits payback is in the 10+ year range. Not attractive…will wait a bit longer for price of solar panels to come down & DIY systems become available. Had an 80 watt system on our liveaboard sailboat n loved it…provided enough energy to run frig, watermaker & kept house batteries up. Good luck with your initiative.
这绝对是一个非常掠夺ressive right now. In the Galveston Texas area they have just upgraded all the electric meters to smart meters. It’s causing quite a stir as everyone guess what will be controlled by these new meters. Can’t wait to see where the smart grid is headed.
One of the aspects that is of critical importance with the smart grid is the ability to ensure security over the networks… not so many people are thinking about this.
Tough project to map out a smart grid but i’m glad to see that the project is going ahead. Our power usage shows no sign of abating so a smart grid is one of several ideas to improve the system. I’m glad to see international interest in the project , good luck with the book Aranya!
