It’s not mathematically impossible to “restore the monarch butterfly population” because: 1) there are around 4 billion milkweed stems in the eastern 2/3rds of the nation so whatever extra 1,000’s are added by these planting projects won’t boost the milkweed stem and corresponding eastern monarch butterfly population even 1/10th of 1%. 2) The milkweed species that BASF and Audubon are planting is an ornamental variety (Asclepias tuberosa) that the monarch butterflies do not favor for breeding (the butterflies are reluctant to lay eggs on tuberosa)
